Archive for April, 2007

Haven’t written a post in about a week. I have been locked away in Northern Virginia (Reston to Sterling and back) for the past week. Hard to get inspired in a place like that, at least for me So, I became inspired to write about how uninspired I was. Mind you, things are not bad, not complaining or whining. Its been a week chock full of work and useful work at that but I would rather be somewhere else, 250 or 350 miles North of here.

There isn’t much to this post, seems rather pointless. On a good note, I will be flying back to New York on Wednesday morning on a business trip. I can already feel the excitement building..

Lonely Wheel Barrel

Lots of yard work at the Miyares Farm the weekend of April 21 as spring finally arrived in Columbia County, at least for the day. The temperature hit the magic number of 70 degrees and for the moment, the boiler fell silent.

Raking, trimming, disposing was the order of the day but some time was taken out for fun with the Dogs who are the happiest of the bunch as well as the traditional trip to Happy Clown for New York’s best ice cream..

Dr Julio Hernandez-Miyares

Dr Julio Hernandez-Miyares! He used to be the king of the “Hernandez-Miyares” vanity search. Top 10 on the first page in Google , Yahoo, it didn’t matter. Then he was dethroned by someone with same last name and with a better grasp of Search Engine Optimization and relegated to the trash-heap of search results; around 3rd page when lucky.

In a act of charity akin to spotting someone a bunch of runs in a baseball game and to make the game interesting, here I confer some page rank equity to the esteemed professor.

In case you can read spanish, here is a link to a post written by Dr Hernandez-Miyares in spanish about his good friend, Cuban Artist Hugo Consuegra

Cuban Bodega

If you look at the inscription on the front of the counter, it says “Thanks Fidel for all that you give us”. Of course that refers to Fidel Castro.
The object of the game here is to find anything in this bodega that resembles food for purchase.
Admittedly, Cubans have a great sense of humour. At least I hope that inscription is an attempt of humour.

The “Central Park” of Hudson, New York in Columbia County. 12 miles north/west of the Miyares Farm. This picture taken on a nice spring day in late March 2007. This part of New York’s spring doesn’t truly become visible until late April. Till then, everything is very brown and very muddy as the collection of snow accumulated over the long winter melts. Hudson, New York was an industrial town that fell upon hard times as industry moved out of high tax New York in the 1960′s. Recently, very recently, it has become a hotbed of antique shops (very expensive) and art galleries frequented largely by New York City . day-trippers. Its intact architecture from late 1800′s , early 1900′s gives it a charm not found in some of the more sterile exurb environments that litter the USA landscape. For your viewing pleasure, here is a link to Julio Miyares’s Hudson, New York Flick collection.

Horses enjoying springtime

Originally uploaded by julio.miyares.

1st day of April and took this spring photo on the way to the “temple”. That is a euphemism for Wal-Mart where it seems all of Columbia County heads to on Saturdays.

Expect for a few mounds, all of the snow has melted and the day was seasonable with highs in the low 50′s farenheit.

This Horse ranch is a few miles from the Miyares Farm.
